Xiangdui Gr

Period:
Cretaceous

Age Interval:
Cretaceous, (8c) KxG

Province:
Xizang (Tibet)

Type Locality and Naming

South Lhasa Block – LhasaCity. The Xiangdui Group was erected by the Third Regional Geological Survey Team under the Sichuan Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources in 1974. The type locality for the designation is in the Xiangdui Town of the Chag’yab County, Xizang. In 1986 Zhao Xijin erected the Laoran Fm and the Zonggu Fm, which have been assigned to Early and Late Cretaceous respectively. [NOTE: It seems that these are now an upper Liuwu Fm and a lower Niedang Fm – assumed here for graphic/age purposes.]

Lithology and Thickness

The present group represents the set of purple red and gray purple medium-fine-grained clastic sediments in the Xiangdui area of Chag’yab, which has been assigned to Late Jurassic-Early Cretaceous.

Lithology Pattern:
Fine-grained sandstone

Relationships and Distribution

Its base marked by gray medium and thin-bedded siltstone and shale occur unconformably on gray medium and thin-bedded slate at the top of the Budala Fm (J3-K1).

Upper contact

Conformable to the tuff-breccia-volcanics at base of the Yeba Fm.
